Effective drug detox - Reform yourself

A drug addiction is never easy to leave and recover from. It is a long and testing process and several individuals stumble at different stages and drop out, thus going back to the addicted life. The detox period refers to the time frame required for the subject to overcome their addiction towards drugs, chemicals or alcohol.
Failures are very common, and hence drug detox processes need to be conducted at certified detoxification centres by expert physicians and counsellors who can provide unconditional care and empathy. Courage and determination to see oneself through till the end of the detox program successfully is crucial, and hence the supervision of caring and concerned therapists and specialists is essential.
Drug detoxification process is often wrongly assumed to be a process wherein the subjects are forced to live in exile, away from the loved ones, but the reality is very different. Therapists and counsellors understand that the individual needs the support of the near and dear ones, and freedom from their addiction can only be sought through the coordinated efforts of the family members and experts. The choice of the drug detox method differs according to extend of addiction, the age and profession of the individual, background, and budget preferences.

Types of drug detox

Acute drug detox -

Severe addiction to drugs like cocaine, marijuana, mood and mind altering drugs, etc. might call for an acute drug detox, wherein the subject has been in and out of drug rehabilitation centres several times, but has either given up or found them unhelpful, thus resulting in a refreshed addiction.
This treatment plan involves long term therapy, and should not be considered unless the addiction levels are very severe and complete abstinence can cause severe psychological and medical problems. Drug therapy or programs like drug maintenance can bring in relief from addiction in the preliminary stages, and acute drug detox should be resorted to only if the subject keeps lapsing into the addiction on a repeated basis.

Rapid drug detox

As the name suggests, Rapid drug detox is meant for individuals who seek a quick relief from their addiction to milder drugs like opiates, heroin, pain-killers and sedatives. Though this process is not covered by insurance and hence not fully approved in the United States. The therapy process involves quick flushing out of all the accumulated toxins and drugs here, and resembles a surgery.
There are a few withdrawal symptoms observed here – none in the case of addiction to painkillers and sedatives, mild sickness in the case of opiate addiction. The process is expensive, and can cost one up to a few thousand dollars. The bigger problem that lies here is the lack of systematic therapy and care, and patients are often seen lapsing back into their addiction, or worse, getting addicted to more severe drugs or alcohol. Rapid drug detox might be less painful than the prolonged acute drug detox programs, but there is a greater chance of relapse.

Selection of drug detox centres

A lot of careful consideration and reviewing goes into the selection of the detoxification centres, since the consequences weigh heavy upon both the patient and the family members. The severity of the addiction often determines the type of detox program required. Admission into drug therapy programs and detox centres is not always budget friendly, and hence a careful balance between the seriousness of the addiction and the budget preferences should be made.

Drugs like cocaine, marijuana, heroin etc. do not require serious medical supervision, and drug therapies for a day or two can bring in notable results. On the contrary, addiction to alcohol, opiates, sedatives and powerful anti-depressants is more serious in nature. The withdrawal symptoms for such addictions can be severe and result in convulsions, seizure, fits and life-threatening instances, and hence close supervision is required during the course of the drug detox programs. Complete abstinence might cause unforeseen problems for some addictions – admitting the patient into a renowned drug detox centre becomes necessary in such cases.

The location, facilities available, and the total budget for the detox program might have serious implications, and careful selection would save the patients and their family members a lot of undue stress, valuable time and the need to worry. A convenient location would mean that the patients would be less distressed and the family members would be able to visit on a regular basis. Selection of a detox and rehabilitation centre wherein professionals can offer unbiased and non – judgemental help is always more preferable. A clinical assessment prior to admitting the patient would help in determining the approximate treatment span and effectiveness.

Drug addicts often lose confidence in themselves and suffer from a low self esteem, and hence selecting a treatment centre which does not pressurise its patients but keeps them motivated is essential. A slow yet steady progress is a better sign of recovery than erratic progress and relapse.

Drug detox – Aftercare Support

The importance of aftercare support is immense. The chances of a relapse are higher just after the conclusion of a detox program. Support after completion of a detox program is what marks the way to a healthy recovery from the addiction. Most reformed addicts find themselves to be at a delicate juncture of their lives, wherein they need to rebuild their relations and lives. Constant motivation and support is essential to ensure that they put in sincere efforts to rebuild their wrecked personal and professional life.

A comprehensive drug detox program would stress on providing a complete continuum of support and care. Aftercare support is essential for all the patients – outpatients or residents – to ensure complete recovery and growth. The abstinence levels should be supervised. A post treatment participation program for all the drug detox patients can be arranged wherein the patients would discuss about their successful abstinence, recovery effects, goals etc. The patients should be encouraged to share their experiences and self-directed plans etc - team coordination can prevent relapses.
